I’ve taken to making my own yogurt, after finding all the vegan store-bought options to be too expensive and too sugary. I was doing it in my dehydrator, but it was making too much noise at night. We finally invested in a Euro Cuisine YM100 Automatic yogurt maker and it has changed my life!
The Euro Cuisine YM100 Automatic yogurt maker has 7 6 ounce jars and works via timer, hence the “automatic” in the title. The cheaper model doesn’t shut off on it’s own, which might be fine depending on how you make yogurt. Since I like to cook mine for 12 hours, I often have it running overnight and love the timer feature so I can have it turnoff while I’m still sleeping.
The yogurt maker couldn’t be easier to use – you create your yogurt mixture and then pour it in the jars, put the jars in the yogurt maker without lids, set the timer for the number of hours you want it to run (between 3-15 hours) and then turn it on. My yogurt comes out amazingly sour, with a great consistency every time. I’m getting far better results than I was in my dehydrator. The batch comes out already perfectly portioned in the handy little 6 ounce jars. I bring yogurt and fresh fruit to work everyday for breakfast now that it is so easy and affordable for me to make my own.
Clean up is very easy with the Euro Cuisine yogurt maker. The appliance itself gets a build-up of moisture on the inside, so I generally just wipe the lid and basket down with a paper towel or cloth to remove the moisture. Every once in a while, I’ll hand wash these just to make sure they stay clean and sterile.
For the jars, I typically handwash the lid and put the glass jar in the dishwasher. Then I store them in the yogurt maker with the lids on to keep everything sterile for the next use. I don’t personally boil my stuff or do anything else to sterilize them, but everyone has their own method. If you don’t have a dishwasher, you can handwash the jars pretty easily. The opening is just big enough to allow for good leverage.
I highly recommend the Euro Cuisine YM100 Automatic yogurt maker. I haven’t tried other brands or models, but I can’t imagine how others could possibly outperform this one. It does one thing, really well – make yogurt. I was so intimidated by the prospect of making my own yogurt (bacteria! fermentation!) but with this appliance it truly could not be easier.
